history

The very first mention about wine-growing in the region where our winery is based dates back to 1135 and to the monastery in Bzovík that was associated with 14 vineyards and 23 vineyard families. Historical records show that wines from this area were delicious, and even found their way to the Hungarian royal court. In the second half of the 20th century, the region became known as the Modrý Kameň vineyard region, hence the name of the company: MOVINO.

Originally known as the Central Slovakia vineyard region, the area that extends from the village of Sebechlebov to Modrý Kameň and the town of Tornal’a near the Hungarian border became quite a distinctive vineyard region. The magical nature of this area has been giving us beautiful and charming wines for many years. The northern part is harsher, while the southern part has a warmer, milder, dry climate and the sun shines longer there. The vineyards are planted on the southern slopes of the Krupinská Plains and Slovak Ore Mountains which descend down to the valley of the Ipeľ River. It’s precisely the Central Slovakia vineyard region that serves as the ingredients base for our company’s wines. Our products used to spread the good name of Krtíš wines in the former Czechoslovakia, as well as abroad. The wines were exported to England, Spain, FRG, Netherlands, and Ecuador.

The MOVINO s.r.o. company was founded in 1994. Originally, MOVINO wasn’t in the business of wine-growing; it simply owned vineyards in the vicinity of the Bušince and Záhorce villages. In 2002, the company bought the operations of Movino a.s. in Veľký Krtíš. It continued the business tradition set by its predecessors, becoming one of the most significant wine producers in Slovakia.
